‘Customer: “Huh. Thought I had change.” I wait, expecting him to reach for a credit card, tap his phone, literally anything normal. I’m working solo at a very upscale coffee bar in a nice part of town.
Customer: “A small cappuccino and a muffin.”
Me: “That’s $10.10.”
He nods, pulls out a crisp $10 bill, then pats his blazer pockets.
Customer: “Huh. Thought I had change.”
I wait, expecting him to reach for a credit card, tap his phone, literally anything normal. Instead, with absolute confidence, he reaches into my tip jar, plucks out a dime, and says:
Customer: “I’m just gonna take a dime out of here.”
He says this like he’s helping ME. Like he’s DOING ME A FAVOR. He hands over the ten and the stolen tip jar dime, like this is all fine.
I keep my voice pleasant, but not too pleasant.
Me: “No, I’ll need you to come up with the money yourself. The money in that jar belongs to us, thank you.”
I slide the dime back into the jar and put his muffin behind the counter. His cappuccino? Just sitting on the tray. Getting cold.
He stares at me, annoyed, then digs in his wallet and, SHOCK, pulls out a card.
Customer: “It’s just ten cents.”
Me: “And yet you don’t have it.”
Transaction completed. I give him his muffin and drink without a word. He doesn’t tip. Of course. The customer turns to another customer, expecting to make an ally.
Customer: “Can you believe this?!”
Other Customer: “I know! Imagine robbing the tip jar in a place where the espresso costs half their hourly wage!”
The customer storms out, and the other customer rolls his eyes before ordering. THAT guy tipped!
